Countries are becoming more similar because people are able to buy the same products anywhere in the world. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Recent technological advancements such as global internet access as well as efficient shipping and posting services have enabled people to buy the same products from almost any spot in the world. This change has led to great similarities between countries, which I think are positive.

To a large extent, access to global market has secured customer rights because the highest quality products can easily be found online at reasonable prices. By surfing the web, one can find their favorite items in different online shops and compare prices and qualities to choose the best one. Regardless of where the host shop is located in the outside world, one can order their product and receive it within a few days. For example, I managed to buy my new state-of-the-art cellphone at a very reasonable price from an online shop located in Europe. Had it been not for the access to global market, I would have had to buy the product at a higher price from a local market.

Moreover, the chance to access the global market can be used to introduce our local products to the world. By making Online shops and offering free shipping and posting, many indigenous products such as handicraft, traditional pottery ornaments can have the chance to be sold globally, having much wider scope of international customers compared to when they are sold at a local store. This way, local businesses are highly likely to be empowered as they have a chance to sell more products globally.

That being said, some argue that being able to shop for the same items “anywhere in the world” can jeopardize the tradition and culture of a society. So many locals might lose their interests in their original culture once they can find international products locally. However, it seems so unlikely for a society to abandon their tradition and cultural identity altogether simply because they can shop online or have international markets around.

In conclusion, although some may downplay the importance of global market on the local cultural identity issues, I strongly believe access to similar products around the world is a positive development. It provides a customer-friendly milieu in the market as well as globalizing local businesses and cultures.
