  • In many countries, people are now living longer than ever before. Some people say an ageing population creates problems for governments. Other people think there are benefits if society has more elderly people.
  • To what extent do the advantages of having an ageing population outweigh the disadvantages?
  •
  • The elderly have the chance to live longer these days due to the medical advancements in the past decades. While it is a great privilege to have a longer life, I strongly believe the issues raised for governments seem extremely challenging.
  • The biggest disadvantage of an aging population is the heavy financial burden they cause for the government. Compared to the young generation, the elderly need more health and medical care which are partly paid by the government. It should also equip more hospitals and special facilities, such as free bus rides, as a sign of respect to its senior citizens. All the while, they are mainly retired and receive pension which is another extra cost for the system.
  • Another disadvantage can be resistance to change as the elderly are largely reluctant to adapt to new situations. All of us have had our moments with our grand parents when they oppose to new exciting changes in our lives, such as leaving a boring job and starting your own small business. When majority of the people are the elderly in the society, welcoming changes becomes an issue. This problem can make it difficult for the government to stay updated and compete on a global scale.
  • Having said that, some believe a higher number of the elderly is advantageous for the society. Grandparents are great care takers of their grandchildren. Kids love to hear their stories and they are free to play for hours with them. The elderly may also have great experiences that can help the younger generation in their professional life. For example, baby boomers experienced the 2008 financial crisis and learnt how to handle it; a valuable lesson to the younger generation.
  • In conclusion, although our grandparents are great assets, the governments are under a lot of pressure to support them. Their expenses are just too high and they usually resist change. Unless countries start new plans to increase birth rate to have a younger generation, they will face a serious financial problem in the short run.
