 The table below gives information on consumer spending on different items in five different countries in 2002.

The table gives a breakdown of the percentage of national consumer spending on three different categories in five different regions in 2002.

Overall, it is evident that in all countries the highest percentage of consumer expenditure was allocated to food/drinks/tobacco group, while leisure/education group had the lowest percentage of consumer spending.

In food/drinks/tobacco category, Turkey had the highest percentage of national consumer spending (32.14%). The rate was immediately followed by Ireland where the proportion of spending was 28.91%. There was a small difference between the figures for Spain, Italy and Sweden where the proportion of expenditure ranged between 18.80% and 15.77%.

In clothing/footwear group, Italy ranked first, at 9.00%. While there was no big difference between proportions of consumer spending in Turkey, Spain and Ireland (6.63%, 6.51 and 6.43% respectively), Sweden accounted for the lowest proportion of spending, at 5.40%.

As far as leisure/education group is concerned, Turkey had the most significant figure (4.35%), while this figure was 1.13% lower for Sweden as it ranked second. Italy allocated 3.20% of consumer spending to leisure/education group. Finally, Ireland and Spain constituted the lowest proportions of consumer spending, with 2.21% for the former and 1.98% for the latter.
