Cambridge 10 –  General – test 4

Many museums charge for admission while others are free.

Do you think the advantages of charging people for admission to museums outweigh the disadvantages?

Museums are representatives of cultural wealth in each society. While there is a charge for admission for many of them, others are free to visit. The fee can be disadvantageous for visitors and authorities although it might be of help to some extent.

The obvious argument in its favor is that equal educational opportunities can be jeopardized once people need to pay for visiting museums. So many students are not rich enough to pay for seeing what they read in their history or science books. Visualizing what they have read about, such as famous paintings, or exhibitions and collections from an old civil war in a nation, may vividly contribute to their learning as students can get a real feel for what they have read in a book. Money can act as a barrier for some of the financially disadvantaged students.

Moreover, the money can cause corruption in the museum management system as in many countries it is not subject to tax. Having a role in enriching a society’s culture reviving the past tradition, museums in many countries are exempted from paying taxes. Once there is no specific monitoring on museum accounts, the authorities might use the money for their personal gains.

There are however, some disadvantages. the fee can support the museum expenses for the curators’ wages and preservation of exhibitions which can be quite costy. The paid fee may also motivate people to value what they see more since since they want to make every penny count.

However, I think the money for museum expenses can come from the local government and not directly from people’s pockets. Additionally, the paid fee cannot be a real enhancement for a student, but the real interest from the bottom of the heart may be.

In conclusion, I believe charging entrance to museums can not only be a threat to education, but it may also create opportunities for fraud. Therefore, the disadvantages obviously outweigh the advantages.
