Choosing a major at university has always been a controversial issue for many students. Some people believe students should pursue their interests while others strongly suggest they should only be able to choose from majors that are probable to be useful in the future. I believe restricting students to studying the most needed majors such as science or technology for the future is a more beneficial choice.

It is commonly believed that education should serve people’s needs which can only happen when the most needed courses are studied. Focusing on the immediate needs of a society in the near future and allowing people to study those courses such as advanced urban design or technology, is highly likely to enhance the quality of life in any society compared to when every major is simply provided in all the universities in a country.

On the other hand, some may argue that once students follow their interests, they may progress faster in their studies. Those who follow their niche might be able to comprehend lessons more deeply as well as do projects better because they devote their whole mind to them. However, this is not likely to happen most of the time as students do not have a clear vision of all the majors to choose their favorite one from prior to their entrance to university.

In conclusion, although following your real interests can result in better learning, I tend to believe providing the most needed courses at universities for students to choose one from can enhance progress in society.
